Mohammad Banyameen Iqbal and Iqra Mushtaq Metaplastic Lesions Of The Female Genital Tract

Metaplastic and pre-neoplastic lesions of the female genital tract are very commonly found in the ageing females more so after menopause. Where as pre-neoplastic lesions, as the name suggests, can transform into a full blown malignancy with time, the metaplastic lesions are not quite notorious, albeit little. It therefore becomes necessary to differentiate pre-neoplastic lesions from metaplastic ones so that proper methods are put into force in proper time so as to save time, money and most importantly the patient. This work of ours is just a beginning of a whole new chapter which believes in early detection of metaplastic lesions histologically, which may or may not progress to pre-neoplastic lesions and further to fully blown neoplastic ones. This book focuses more on the metaplastic lesions of the female genital tract (uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix etc) and their relative incidence with each other. The facts in this book are based upon a study conducted on over 200 post-operative patient specimens, over a period of two years in a tertiary care hospital facility in Jammu and Kashmir region of India.

Kilic-Berkmen Gamze Mouse Pancreas Organogenesis and Prox1 gene

The pancreas is a mixed (exocrine and endocrine) glandular organ that is important for food digestion and glucose homeostasis. Developmental anomalies or disorders that affect normal pancreas homeostasis may cause various life-threatening diseases such as pancreatitis, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and pancreatic cancer. In the past two decades, an increasing number of studies have begun to unravel the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating mammalian pancreas organogenesis. The information extracted from these studies should be valuable both, to better understand the etiology of some pancreatic diseases, and to design new therapeutic tools to cure those diseases. A recent study reported expression of the homeodomain transcription factor Prox1 in the presumptive pancreatic region of mouse embryos. This finding raised the possibility that, similar to other tissues, proper pancreas development requires the function of Prox1. The studies described in this book sought to uncover the role of Prox1 during mouse pancreas organogenesis.

Dr Gunvanti Rathod, Pragnesh Parmar Lesions of Cervix - A Review

Colposcopic examination of cervix with cervical cytology is very frequently used to screen the cervical lesion. Accuracy of cervical cytology is less as compared to Histopathological examination. Therefore histopathological examination of biopsies of cervical lesions and hysterectomy specimens is the gold standard. Carcinoma of the cervix is the most common cancer in Indian women and accounts for 20% of all malignant tumours in the females. In this book we discussed anatomy, epidemiology, aetiopathogenesis, benign squamous cell lesions, benign glandular lesions and other tumors of the cervix. This book is very helpful for postgraduate students and faculties of Pathology and Obstetrics and Gynecologists.

The actual relationship between periodontal and pulpal disease was first described by Simring and Goldberg in 1964. Since then, the term "perio-endo" lesion has been used to describe lesions due to inflammatory products found in varying degrees in both the periodontium and the pulpal tissues.Endodontic-periodontal lesions present challenges to the clinician as far as diagnosis and prognosis of the involved teeth are concerned.Treatment and prognosis of endodontic-periodontal diseases vary and depend on the cause and the correct diagnosis of each specific condition. This book presents a review on pathogenesis of endo-perio lesions and their differential diagnosis. It also presents a study on role of non-surgical endodontic treatment as a sole treatment in management of endo-perio lesions. It also emphasizes on importance of long term follow-up in managing of such cases.

Monika Dahiya Prevalence of Oral Manifestations HIV Infection

This book outlines the current epidemiology of HIV associated oral lesions globally and stratifies countries falling under all six WHO regional offices according to high, medium and low prevalence of oral manifestations of HIV infection. Currently there are many knowledge gaps in the prevalence of oral lesions related to HIV infection from different regions as majority of the countries have no database or referral system for these kind of lesions. This is an obstacle to the implementation of various HIV prevention and health promotion programmes as oral lesions are strong indicators of HIV infection, invariably often are the first lesions to be identified and reportedly, are markers of disease progression and parallel the changes in various laboratory markers like CD4 cell count and HIV viral load. Having such a database can prove to be very pivotal in our fight against AIDS because of its diagnostic and prognostic significance. This work is amongst some early studies to show the prevalence globally across countries falling under all six WHO regional offices.

Elizabeth McInnes Pathology for Toxicologists. Principles and Practices of Laboratory Animal Study Personnel

Non-pathologists, such as toxicologists and study personnel, can find it difficult to understand the data they receive from pathologists. Toxicological pathologists write long, detailed and highly technical reports. Study personnel are under daily pressure to decide whether lesions described in pathology reports are treatment-related and thus important to the pharmaceutical company or whether the lesions are background changes and thus of little significance. Written by experienced toxicological pathologists, Pathology for Toxicologists: Principles and Practices of Laboratory Animal Pathology for Study Personnel serves to bridge the gap in the understanding of pathology data, enabling non-pathologists to more easily comprehend pathology reports, better integrate pathology data into final study reports and ask pathologists relevant questions about the test compound. This succinct, fully referenced, full colour book is suitable for toxicologists at all stages of their training or career who want to know more about the pathology encountered in laboratory animals used in safety studies. Key features include important chapters on spontaneous and target organ lesions in rats, mice, non-human primates, mini pigs, rabbits and beagle dogs as well as information on general pathology, macroscopic target organ lesions, ancillary pathology techniques, haematology, biochemistry and adversity. Umesh Velu,Awadesh Kumar Dixit and Shambunath Prasad EGFR expression the role of Gefitinib in Oral cavity lesions

Oral Cavity cancer is the 10th most common malignancy globally. EGFR is a glycoprotein encoded by a gene located on chromosome 7p12. Stimulation of EGFR will activate an intracellular signalling pathway, leading to the inhibition of apoptosis, activation of cell proliferation and angiogenesis, as well as an increase in metastatic spread potential. In premalignant lesions EGFR can be considered as an early marker of a cell proliferation on cell differentiation as well as early marker of epithelial dysplasia and onset of cancer in oral premaligant lesions. Hence cancers of oral cavity can be prevented and progress of carcinogenisis may be stopped at a early stage. EGFR evaluation can be used as a Screening tool in premalignant lesions to determine its malignant potential. In Malignant it has been seen that there is better response to treatment when EGFR Inhibitor Gefitinib was combined to the standard regimen of CCRT in Locally advanced Oral cavity malignant lesions.

In vivo stains are the prompt resources, which have emerged in recent years so as to aid as clinical diagnostic tools in detecting early potentially malignant and malignant lesions. Toluidine blue by its property of retaining in the increased DNA and RNA cellular activity areas, aids in delineating the suspicious areas. However, it is hazardous if swallowed, and was shown to have toxicity to fibroblasts. Methylene blue has a similar chemical structure and exhibits similar physicochemical properties to toluidine blue. It is less toxic to the human body and has recently been proposed for screening some gastrointestinal or prostate tumors. The application of this material in detecting oral lesions has so far not been addressed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and reliability of in vivo staining with methylene blue as a diagnostic adjunct in screening for oral malignant or potentially malignant lesions. The present study involved the examination of seventy five patients suspected of having oral malignant or potentially malignant lesions by methylene blue staining.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is the sixth most common cancer in the world. Oral cancer accounts for nearly 50% of all newly diagnosed cancers in India. Oral cavity cancers are the most common cancers in males and the third most common in females in India. Majority of them are associated with tobacco chewing and usually preceded by premalignant lesions. On an average, about 1% of oral lesions transform into cancer annually.15 to 20% of dysplastic lesions develop into carcinoma. One of the primary reasons for the poor prognosis is the lack of significant and unique molecular tumor markers to assess risk and prognosis. Identification of better prognostic factors is necessary to assist in more accurate lesional staging and prediction of prognosis.

Remineralization is increasingly accepted as a viable non-invasive approach for restoring carious teeth, at least during the earlier stages of the caries process. According to the principles of minimal intervention dentistry, optimal non-invasive strategies are preferred for treatment of early enamel lesions. This study was designed to investigate the remineralising efficacy of casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate on early enamel lesions using energy dispersive x-ray analysis for quantitative assessment and scanning electron microscope for morphological changes. It can be inferred from the study that casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate paste significantly remineralises the early enamel lesions substantially .This could be attributed to the diffusion of calcium and phosphate minerals into the surface with the aid of saliva as the transport medium. This book gives an overview of how we can measure the amount of mineral loss or gain quantitatively along with the morphological changes.

Fahad Samadi,Bastian Thattil and ANIL SINGH Vesiculo-Bullous Lesions of the Oral Cavity

Vesiculobullous diseases are immunologically mediated disorders that cause blisters, erosion and erythema of both skin and mucous membranes. They are uncommon clinicopathologic syndromes whose diagnosis depends on identification of characteristic causative agent and clinicopathologic features. None of the histopathologic patterns of vesiculobullous conditions is absolutely specific for any of them. For a variety of reasons, these conditions represent the most difficult challenge for clinical diagnosis. Bullous diseases can mimic one another clinically and histologically. These lesions are quite distinctive in early stages, but after “blisters” rupture and disappear, the resultant ulcerative lesion is quite non-specific in appearance. Originally surrounded by red rims these lesions appear white, while the vesicles or blebs are intact. When the blebs fully rupture and become emptied, their white appearance usually disappears. In the oral cavity both vesicle and bullae are more flattened, with a smooth gelatinous surface. When attempting to differentiate between a vesicular from a bullous lesion, the size of the individual lesion is the key to diagnosis.

Oral Exfoliative Cytology is a cost effective and perhaps the best procedure for the initial evaluation and diagnosis of oral lesions. It is simple, safe and reliable, especially in population-based screening programs, where repeated samples might be required.Liquid-based cytology, since its inception in the 1990s, has shown significant advantages over conventional exfoliative cytology. Studies in cervical cytology have shown that the LBC reduces the problems related to sampling and preparation of better smears. Blood, inflammation and mucus are reduced and cells are distributed randomly throughout the slide. The clear background thus obtained enhances sensitivity and quality. As compared to conventional smears, the use of liquid-based preparations has shown to greatly reduce the number of slides that are unsatisfactory, or satisfactory but limited by specimen artifacts, diminishing the false negative results. The book highlights the role of liquid based cytology in oral lesions and its comparison with conventional brush cytology.
